Small acreages and horse country

The 2022 USDA Census of Agriculture counts 4,379 farms in Parker County, averaging just 78 acres. 77% are under 50 acres, and 55% sell less than $2,500 a year. Livestock makes up 88% of the county's $68.5 million in sales. Horse sales of $26.7 million rank first in Texas and seventh in the nation, which fits Weatherford's title as the "Cutting Horse Capital of the World." The county also counts about 44,500 cattle, 21,100 goats and 12,100 horses.

Most jobs here are a few dozen acres of horse or cattle pasture, not big row-crop fields.

Spraying next to new subdivisions

Parker County is one of the fastest-growing counties in Texas. Its population went from about 148,000 in 2020 to about 180,000 by mid-2024, and new rooftops now border pasture on almost every road. Drift onto lawns, gardens, ornamental trees and pools is the biggest risk in these jobs. Pilots map houses, play areas and gardens as no-spray zones, choose coarse droplets, keep downwind buffers and fly only with wind blowing away from homes. A drone can spray a 15-acre horse pasture between two subdivisions where a ground rig would leave drift and tracks. Landowners keeping 1-d-1 open-space valuation also need to show active management, and dated spray records help document it.

Broomweed, grassbur and horse-safe intervals

Annual broomweed. AgriLife recommends spraying from late March to May, while plants are under 6 inches. Options are 2,4-D, Grazon P+D or Cimarron, applied in calm wind, and good results are about 70% kill. Heavy broomweed years follow wet winters and springs.

Grassbur (sandbur). Pre-emergent Prowl H2O is labeled on dormant bermuda only, and Rezilon on bermuda and bahia. Pastora is the post-emergent option, but it also kills bahia. Grassbur is hard to spot until burs form and does well on acidic, low-fertility ground.

Grazing and haying intervals.

Product Before grazing Before hay
GrazonNext HL 0 days 7 days
DuraCor 0 days 14 days
Pastora, Chaparral none none

Horse owners should also confirm label language for horses specifically. Plants toxic to horses in Texas include hemlock, bracken fern, Johnsongrass and locoweed, so a weed survey before spraying is time well spent.

Fall armyworm in coastal bermuda

Fall armyworms do not overwinter in North Texas. They migrate in each season and can strip a hay meadow in days. AgriLife treats at more than 2–3 larvae half an inch or longer per square foot, and larvae eat about 80% of their food in the last two or three days, so early action pays. Spray early morning or evening. Waiting periods: carbaryl needs 14 days before grazing or haying, methoxyfenozide 0 days for grazing and 7 for hay, and diflubenzuron 1 day for hay. Bermudagrass stem maggot does not respond well to pyrethroids, so early harvest is the main tool.

Weatherford peaches and pecans

The Parker County Peach Festival in downtown Weatherford reached its 41st year on July 11, 2026. Plum curculio is the key peach pest. AgriLife times sprays at petal fall, at shuck split, and then every two weeks for about three more passes. Feeding wounds let in brown rot and cause cat-facing. Parker County also has 1,146 acres of pecans, where casebearer timing in late May and early June drives the main spray. Small, hilly orchards next to homes suit a drone better than an air-blast sprayer.

Brazos River, Lake Weatherford and water care

The Brazos River crosses the western side of the county, and Lake Weatherford, a 1,112-acre city reservoir on the Clear Fork of the Trinity River, lies about 7 miles east of town. Stock tanks sit in almost every pasture. Pilots keep buffers on all of them, never spray over water unless the product is labeled for it, and avoid spraying ahead of heavy rain.

Texas rules and NAS JRB airspace

Parker County is not a TDA regulated-herbicide county under 4 TAC §7.53, and neither are Tarrant, Wise, Jack, Palo Pinto, Hood or Johnson. Dallas County is. For-hire drone work requires a TDA commercial applicator license ($200 a year) with the Aerial category and a site category such as Pasture and Rangeland. Operators also need FAA Part 107 and Part 137 certification and a Section 44807 exemption for drones of 55 pounds or more. Parker County Airport (WEA), 5 miles east of Weatherford, is untowered, and Bourland Field is in Cresson. NAS JRB Fort Worth lies about 12 nautical miles east of WEA. Fields in eastern Parker toward Azle, Willow Park and Aledo may need LAANC or FAA authorization.
